What is Leptospirosis? Know the Risks and Symptoms


Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease affecting both humans and animals, spread mainly through the urine of infected animals like rats.

How Do You Get It?


You can get it from:


• Contact with contaminated water or soil.
• Direct contact with infected animals.
• Consuming contaminated food or water.

Watch Out for These Symptoms!


Symptoms of Leptospirosis can appear anywhere from a few days to a few weeks after exposure and can be easily mistaken for other illnesses like the flu or dengue. Be vigilant for:

• High fever
• Severe headache
• Muscle aches, particularly in the calves and lower back
• Chills
• Red eyes
• Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
• Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)

In severe cases, Leptospirosis can lead to kidney damage, meningitis, liver failure, and even death. Early detection and treatment are crucial.
